New Film Training Course at HFCC

Henry Ford Community College offered a two-week 40-hour Basic Film Set Training Course at The Michigan Technical Center (M-TEC) September 22-October 3. The program offered by HFCC and Tic Toc Studios was intended to provide intensive, hands-on training to prepare individuals for entry-level employment in the film and television industry.
The first week, students were introduced to the basics of the film industry, gaining an understanding of the culture and vocabulary. The second week was a hands-on experience where students interacted with other industry professionals, worked on their resumes and walked away with strategies to gain industry employment. Tic Toc Studios, a West Michigan-based production company with offices in Los Angeles, developed the curriculum and implemented the program in Western Michigan with Grand Rapids Community College, but this is Tic Toc's first venture in East Michigan and HFCC is the first college in the East to implement Tic Toc's program.
"Tic Toc has an intention to take the program statewide," said Dori Depree, Head of Educational Outreach at Tic Toc Studios. "HFCC approached Tic Toc Studios and we believed it was a natural fit." The program coming to fruition required many partnerships, including HFCC, Tic Toc Studios, The Wayne County Executive Office (WCEO), and Southeastern Michigan Community Alliance (SEMCA), the latter being one of 25 Michigan Works! Agencies created by the state to simplify public and business access to educational training and economic self-help opportunities.
"Partnerships make things happen," according to Linda West, Director of Workforce Development at HFCC. Partnerships indeed worked insofar as making the Basic Film Set Training Course a reality at HFCC. One of the WCEO's goals is to get displaced workers jobs through entry-level employment. They got word of Tic Toc through press releases, having heard of the success of Tic Toc's Studios program at Grand Rapids Community College Lakeshore Campus in Holland, Michigan. The WCEO decided they wanted to bring the program to the East side of Michigan. "We contacted several colleges in implementing the program and HFCC was immediately onboard," said Todd Fenton, Executive Project Manager at WCEO.
