For five years the Mid-American Conference and its athletes have had a bit of a problem with following the rules. While the MAC is still striving to become a national presence on the athletic fields in the way the Big Ten or any other BCS conference is, it has done a fairly good job of keeping pace with the big guns in national scandals.

I'm a geek for the Olympics.
I live, breathe, Tivo, and eat the Olympic spirit of competition, and of course, Michael Phelps.
However, despite my ongoing support and fervor of this momentous spectacle, this Olympics left a sour taste in my mouth. It wasn't because China won more gold medals than the U.

Much like a high school crush, my first forays into blogging were awkward experiences that offered little satisfaction and a few embarrassing moments.

Bowling Green has been described as a lot of things; beautiful is not one of them.
Which is why we at The BG News commend the University and USG for focusing on the run-down and neglected campus buildings and landscape. What prospective student wouldn't want to attend BGSU for the weathered quality and dim lighting of University Hall, or the flat treeless expanses that border the University like a concrete moat?
Cleaning up campus doesn't only help make a lasting impression on prospective students, but also shows the University gives a damn about the thousands of people who work, eat, learn and live on campus every single day.

With a new state law that mitigates textbook prices and a wealth of buying and renting options online, buying books each semester can hopefully be a less stressful -- and less financially draining -- experience.

It comes as no surprise that as the price of gas at the pump has skyrocketed, so has approval by the American public for renewed offshore drilling. Various politicians and oil barons have seized on the opportunity, touting it as a necessary means of providing relief to the hurting American consumer.

My summer was pretty low-key (that's a euphemism for "I sat around and didn't do anything that special"), and one of the more exciting aspects of that time was the arrival of what is one of the most commercially successful movies ever made: "The Dark Knight.

August is finally here, and I'm back at Kent State. I was so excited to come back; being away from home is an ultimate bonus when at college. I know many new students are going to take full advantage of being away from their parents, but the newfound freedom needs to be censored a little.

As I sit here writing my first column as editor, I'm trying to find one word to describe my vision for this semester's Daily Kent Stater. I could throw around journalism jargon like convergence or multimedia. Or, like past editors, tell you how I want the Stater to be your newspaper.

To some residents, the opening of a Hooters restaurant is emblematic of Mount Pleasant's moral decay.
This was a nice town, they argue, and opening a Hooters will, in the words of one resident, ruin it.
It's easy to lambaste Hooters because of its popular image: girls in short shorts and tight tops.

The recent bout of scandals involving high-ranking Democrats in Ohio may lead to more than a series of political headaches and official investigations. While the general national dissatisfaction with the current Republican administration undeniably favors Senator Barack Obama and his party, the winds may be blowing in a different direction in the Buckeye swing state.

Sometimes the best part of an experience also can be the most overwhelming. Ball State truly is a great school. I know it sounds like one of the pamphlets the administration puts out to get parents excited about sending us here, but it is true. Ball State will let you experience so many different things.

Congratulations Ball State. Once again the administrators have put students' best interests to mind.
The university prides itself on having top-notch professors with several years of experience in their fields, and one newly hired professor could not get much more experience than being the former mayor of Indianapolis.

The 2007-08 academic year was an eventful one for Central Michigan University.
The CMU Promise, the university's guarantee to incoming freshmen that their tuition will stay fixed for five years, was nixed last spring. Construction on a new education building is underway, while another hotel in the Center for Applied Research and Technology is in the works.

City mayor doing more harm than good
by sticking around
Kwame Kilpatrick's attorneys have asked Gov. Jennifer Granholm to reconsider denying the hearing to oust Kilpatrick as mayor.
At this point in the mayor's text messaging scandal and assault case, a hearing shouldn't be the cause for Kilpatrick to leave office - he should have enough cause to leave on his own.
